Summer time means being active and having fun, swimming and being outside in the sun. It’s great being active and busy for the summer, and some women forget to take care of their hair, so when September comes, it’s good to do some maintenance on your locks, and My Hair Trip will tell you what you need to get your hair back to healthy.
1. Get a trim: Your hairs natural oils keep it protected and supple, sun and chlorine sap those oils from your hair. This can cause split ends and frizziness. Getting a cut of a half inch or so can make your hair look better, instantly.
2. Rehydrate daily: instead of your regular conditioner try using one of our conditioners from Davines or Phia designed for dry and/or damaged hair. If your hair is really dry or damaged, leave your conditioner in your hair rather than rinsing. Also, picking up one of our hair serums and/or mists might be a good idea.
3. Make sure you choose the right shampoo. Shampoos that are made for washing out chlorine are awesome for days when you are actually swimming. But if you already have chlorine damage, those shampoos don’t do much good. Instead, use a hydrating type like Davines’s Oi shampoo or any of our Phia products which will literally work magic enriching and moisturizing your hair, while it cleans it.
4. Wash your hair only when it is necessary. There’s literally nothing better for your hair than its own natural oils, so shampooing every day washes those oils out of your hair and doesn’t give them time to work their way down the hair shaft. You probably want to try to go at least one day between shampoos — two to three if your hair can handle it.
5. Brush, brush, brush! A great way to let your hair’s natural oils repair your damaged hairs is through regular brushing. “It distributes the natural oils and encourages your hair to shine. We recommend to our clients to brush their hair every evening.
6. Keep an eye on your hair and look for signs of serious dehydration. If you are running into the common problem with your hair not holding any style that you try to do to it, that means it is seriously dehydrated from summer. To fix this problem, avoid styling products that will dry your hair, such as gels that contain alcohol, and any maximum-hold hairsprays.
7. The foods you eat can help to nourish your hair. Good fats, such as omega-3s, and B vitamins actually help hair grow strong, shiny, and full of body. Try adding salmon, tuna, nuts, and seeds to your diet. You don’t have to go crazy or overload on these foods, your body only absorbs a certain amount daily anyway.
8. Use cool air setting to dry your hair. The heat from your blowdryer will damage hair the same way that the sun does. While you’re nursing your hair back to health, switch to the cool setting on your blow dryer.
9. Don’t use hot tools for a little while. Heated metal styling tools like flat irons and curling irons can cause more damage to your locks.
10. Try one of our hair masks or moisturizing oil treatments. Our stylists and clients have been raving about our all natural, super effective essential oil treatments. This is your fastest most effective path back to healthy hair.Leave a reply

The reasons to DIY your own skincare supplies go way beyond cheap and easy (though we’ve preached that message to you again and again!). When you use exfoliating body scrub, you’re not just giving your skin a pleasant-smelling, silky smooth makeover — you’re also lathering on vitamins and minerals that benefit your body in major ways. That grapefruit in your scented scrub? It helps eliminate wrinkles. Or the coffee grounds in your latte lather? It actually minimizes cellulite for a precious few hours.
So yeah, you could say this mind-blowing info gave us the incentive to create five power scrubs that go far beyond exfoliating. Start by gathering a slew of fridge and pantry-friendly organic ingredients — yes, organic DOES make a difference — and we’ll show you how to mix and mash them into serious skincare saviors.
BANANA BROWN SUGAR SCRUB
This moisturizing, oil-free scrub gives your skin a youthful glow. Plus, it’s packed with vitamins and minerals to help keep your skin tight.
– 1 cup brown sugar
– 3 brown bananas
Add brown sugar and brown banana chunks (they break down much easier than yellow bananas) to a bowl and mush with a spatula. To get the consistency just right, use your fingers to crush the banana bits. Bonus! You can totally lick your fingers clean! No joke — we kept saying what a dope pancake topping this scrub would make. Organic ingredients FTW!
GRAPEFRUIT-AVOCADO OIL SUGAR SCRUB
Grapefruit brings its free-radical fighting powers to this scrub that helps equalize your skin tone and bust everything from blemishes to wrinkles. Best news: Mild avocado oil won’t block your pores.
– 1 cup sugar
– 1/2 grapefruit, squeezed
– 3 tablespoons avocado oil
Juice half a grapefruit into a bowl of sugar and pour in your avocado oil (AVOO if you think like Rachael Ray), then stir to combine. Remember: The more you stir, the more the sugar will dissolve, so use more of a folding motion if you want to keep the granules in tact!
LAVENDER-GRAPESEED OIL SEA SALT SCRUB
Dried lavender exfoliates as it soothes the senses in this acne-fighting scrub. Sub sea salt for sugar to scrub away dead skin and other impurities. Lavender and sea salt are also perfect PICs for those battling eczema.
– 1 cup sea salt
– 2-3 sprigs dried lavender
– 2-6 drops lavender essential oil
– 1 cup grape seed oil
Remove the lavender buds from the sprigs just like you would with herbs like thyme and rosemary, then boost the calming aroma by adding drops of lavender essential oil to your sea salt scrub. Pour in the grapeseed oil and gently mix to combine.
COFFEE-COCONUT OIL SUGAR SCRUB
Coffee is the wonder ingredient in this antioxidant packed-scrub: it not only reinvigorates your senses, but it also lightens and brightens the skin AND temporarily minimizes cellulite. Can we get an Amen!? We paired it with creamy coconut oil — one of the most moisturizing natural ingredients around.
– 1/2 cup sugar
– 1/2 cup ground coffee
– 1 cup coconut oil
Coffee and sugar join forces outside the mug to make this scrub that’s bound together by coconut oil. Don’t even reach for the spatula with this mixture: the warmth from your hands will melt the coconut oil like a dream. Plus, it’s an excuse to get down and dirty 😉
PUMPKIN-HONEY BAKING SODA SCRUB
This super gentle scrub has hella restorative powers from vitamin-packed pumpkin, which can help reverse skin damage. Soothing honey gives your skin a natural glow and helps to unclog pores.
– 1 can pumpkin
– 1 cup baking soda
– 1/4 cup honey
So baking soda kinda came out of left field, right? It’s an extremely gentle exfoliant, so this scrub is great for those with super sensitive skin. Mix it together with pumpkin pulp and honey and you’re done. (PS: As tempting as this pumpkin scrub may look, don’t try to taste it—baking soda is NOT a palette pleaser!).
Unless you and your gal pals are planning to use these scrubs straight from the mixing bowl at a stay-at-home spa day (um, that sounds nice!), you’ll want to transfer your scrubs into containers so that they’ll keep longer (about a week in the fridge). We used glass jars so we could see exactly what scrub is inside—A+ for easy access.
How gorgeous did these scrubs turn out? They definitely indicate how good your skin will look and feel once you lather them on!
We couldn’t resist compiling all of this eye candy — these scrubs are stunning from every angle 🙂 And since they’re all so easy to make, you don’t even have to pick and choose from the group, lucky you! For reals, why buy expensive skincare products when you can DIY just like that?

My Hair Trip Salon Denver is looking for one great stylist / colorist to join our team. My Hair Trip is Colorado’s only green salon, barbershop, art gallery, and jewelry and apparel boutique. Our team has a great chemistry right now and the vibe in our shop is really great. It feels good looking forward to coming into work. We are looking for another great stylist that is focused on their career as an artist, and is positive and upbeat about being the best they can be at whatever it is they do.
We give our stylists what they need to succeed. Our staff enjoys massive exposure we receive from 1st Friday Art Walks and other Art District events. Being located at 8th and Santa Fe, in the heart of the Art District is really great for us. There is foot traffic down here everyday, and there are lots of events in the district that bring people to our neighborhood, and in through our door year-round. We are a fully functioning art gallery as well as a premier salon, so we have a great pull for art district events and the walls of our shop are always full of great local art from all over the state. Our clients love it and so do we. Our stylists also receive commission on anything they sell in our boutique or gallery in addition to their product and service commissions. Our stylists start at 40% commission on services and can earn all the way up to 75%. Our product commission is 17.5% which is much hire than the average salons in Denver offering 10%.
We have product and technique knowledge classes going on all the time. Our stylists can do as much or as little as they want to, as far as continuous education. Whenever one of our stylists go to a class, or workshop, or seminar and learn something new, they come back and show the rest of us what they learned, so we are all always on the cutting edge of styles, trends, and techniques. We also offer our stylists sales incentives such as tickets to shows, and education classes and events.
We are an organic, eco friendly shop so we are looking for a stylist that is interested in using the chemical free products and services that we offer. We also really want to bring on someone who, either is passionate about organic, green living in their own life, or at least is interested and willing to learn more about what healthy green living is. Our stylists and their clients are loving the top of the line health and beauty products and services we provide.
We use Organic Color Systems for our color line and we really, really love it! We only do business with other businesses that, not only have chemical free products and services, but that are also ethical and green throughout all aspects of their business.
We carry Davines, Alterna – Bamboo, and Use Me products. Davines is our main product line and it is incredible, all of our clients are loving what we are doing for their hair with these product lines.Leave a reply

Trust me, when it comes to hair dye, I’m as picky as an amateur can be. I’ve been dyeing my hair red for 12 years, and I’ve managed to pick up a few tricks: I know exactly what to say to get the right shade (“copper tones, not purple”) and I’ve strategized how to reduce the damage for my single-process dye job (only color the roots and use a glaze on the ends).
But after all of those years of gaining expertise at the salon, I still wasn’t 100 percent satisfied with the results. My once-resilient hair had started to become dry and less vibrant, and the color seemed to fade within a week. So I decided to give organic hair color a try. Sure, the prospect was scary at first — I’m just as guilty as most people when it comes to equating “natural” with “less effective” when assessing beauty products. But after a little research, I discovered the Organic Color System and became intrigued.
Standard, non-organic hair dye is loaded with all sorts of questionably safe chemicals: ammonia, formaldehyde, sodium laurel sulphates and parabens, to name a few. Much of the research focuses on how the chemicals affect the salon workers who use them daily, but it’s not hard to see how years of chemical abuse would leave my hair — and that of 75 percent of American women who admit to dyeing their hair — less shiny and soft. (Aging, it should be noted, could be a factor here, too.) The Organic Color System, on the other hand, is a natural, ammonia-free solution that promises long-lasting, vibrant results. Between 98-99 percent of the ingredients are naturally derived or organic, and the only synthetic ingredients are the pigments and stabilizers.
Cue the skepticism. Would this dye really work?
Rather than make an uneducated assumption about organic dye, I decided to book an appointment with hairstylist Mordechai Alvow at New York City’s Yarok Beauty Kitchen. Using the Organic Color System, Alvow helped me choose between the 64 shades offered (even blonde!). The process was exponentially more enjoyable, since the anti-oxidant blend of aloe vera leaf, comfrey root, orange peel and grapefruit seed in the organic dye didn’t have the same headache-inducing effects of the harsh-smelling, ammonia-filled dye you get in most salons. (It didn’t hurt that Alvow’s adorable dog was perched on my lap the whole time, either.)
But even the most pleasant smells couldn’t get me to go organic if the results weren’t at least as good as the chemical stuff. Luckily, they were. After Alvow was done with me, the color was the most striking shade of copper red I’ve ever had, and I didn’t have that pesky line of demarcation that always gives me what I call “fire roots” (freshly dyed roots that never seem to blend properly until after a couple of washes). The best part: My hair felt 10 pounds lighter and as soft as an 8-year-old’s. Needless to say, I’m an organic hair dye convert.
Just like with standard dye, Alvow told me that the maintenance of the Organic Color System is pretty simple: Avoid products with sulfates, and wash your hair less often and with water that’s not too hot. (PSA: His haircare line Yarok has shampoo and conditioner that’s safe for color-treated hair.)
So fellow hair color devotees, all I ask of you is this: Try organic hair dye and see what you think. If the ecological and health benefits don’t sway you, the soft, chemical-free hair you get might be what convinces you to officially switch teams.

Many of us have heard of – or even tried – the Brazilian blowout. But what exactly is this keratin-based hair-smoothing treatment anyway? And what’s all the hype about? To start, the Brazilian blowout was pioneered in – you guessed it – Brazil. It was developed as a hair-straightening treatment that doesn’t burn the skin or scalp.
I have naturally curly hair, and it takes a lot of time to keep this mane in check, so I was excited when I found out about the Brazilian blowout. Finally, I could relax my curls and give my hair a beautiful shine. All I needed to do was step out of the shower and let my hair dry on its own. Further, the Brazilian blowout did exactly what it claimed to do – and I would only have to have the treatment every three months.
But as we know, nothing is perfect. There is a price to pay when getting a Brazilian blowout because the blowout – along with other hair smoothing treatments – contains formaldehyde and chemicals that can cause both acute and long-term health effects.
Formaldehyde is a chemical that is used as a preservative, an embalming agent and a disinfectant. However, formaldehyde can also modify our hair proteins, called keratins, causing the hair to return to its original, smooth, healthy state. Some of the other chemicals that can cause health issues are methylene glycol, formalin, methylene oxide, paraform, formic aldehyde, methanol, oxomethane, oxymethylene and CAS Number 50-00-0. The chemical methylene glycol is formed when formaldehyde gas is added to water; when heated, this chemical turns back into formaldehyde gas and is then released into the air.
According to Jarrod Harms, an industry expert and owner of Detour Salon in San Diego California, these chemicals can be harmful at room temperature. “But when they are heated, the intensity is increased and can cause harm to both you and your stylist,” says Harms. Some of the acute side effects include nosebleeds, burning eyes and throat, skin irritations and asthma attacks. These chemicals can also lead to long-term health issues, including nasopharyngeal cancer and leukemia.
Formaldehyde, among these other chemicals, is not illegal, and obviously can be used in cosmetic products. Because of these reported health risks, the FDA has now stated that these blowouts are “misbranded because its label and labeling (including instructions for use) make misleading statements regarding the product’s ingredients and fail to reveal material facts with respect to consequences that may result from the use of the product.” In other words, these blowouts are not illegal. However, they lead us to believe that these products are safe and have no harmful side effects. The problem here is related to disclosure.
So should you get one or not? Well, think of this blog as a drug commercial. I know you’ve seen them: someone running on the beach, laughing and enjoying life, while the voice tells you how well the drug works. But then the voice quickly spouts off a laundry list of all the side effects. It’s the same thing with these products, except before the FDA stepped in, all you ever heard about were the benefits.
You can decide whether you want to take a risk by getting a Brazilian blowout. It’s like anything in life: You weigh the risk against the reward. Now, when it comes to the Brazilian blowout, you can base your decision on the facts.

Wow! This has been the craziest year ever! We signed the lease on our space for the salon in October and the journey to this point has been incredible. Building a salon is hardwork, but now that we can see it in real life it is so freakin cool. We have been super blessed to have a lot of great people that have helped us along the way!
We started the creative process of building our new hair salon in downtown Denver on Pinterest.com actually… It’s a super sweet site that can be a powerful creative tool. We started a “Salon ideas” board and started pinning pictures and articles from different Salon’s around the world that we liked. We used stuff from other shops, stores, and restaurants as well. Through all the pics and articles a “feel” and “vibe” of what we wanted for our new organic hair salon began to emerge.
We went back and forth with our designer and worked out the design for our own salon. We knew we wanted the interior design of our hair salon to vibe with our eco-friendly philosophy. We got most of our materials through scavenging and donations of reclaimed stuff.
Paul learned how to build this year, and made a bunch of the stuff in the salon from scratch using the reclaimed materials.
We have looked into all the other hair salons in Denver, and just tried to make ours better… There really isn’t another salon like ours in Colorado, maybe any wear. We are super proud of our uniqueness and we love seeing people’s faces light up when they come in.
These last couple of weeks for our salon have been huge. The phone’s ringing, our team is starting to mesh real well, we got our first suite rented and the ball is really rolling.
We love love being able to offer chemical-free salon product and services in Denver, one of the greatest cities in the world! Having our hair salon in Denver is so perfect for us! We’ve really started setting our roots in our Art District neighborhood. The buzz down here is palpable and its so exciting for us and our salon!
People have really been digging our concept. Chemical-free, organic, green, products and services. Salon plus Barbershop plus clothing and jewelry boutique plus art gallery! There really isn’t anything like My Hair Trip around. We are so proud and happy that people are liking what we have to offer at our Denver Salon!Leave a reply
