Essential oils for hair can help promote healthy hair and scalp, reduce dryness and hair loss associated with the natural aging process.
Do you want great, healthy looking hair? Every time I walk into get my hair cut, my stylist always says she can’t believe how fast my hair grows and how shiny it is!
But, first, did you know that…
How our hair looks, feels and grows can change based on –
What we put on it (synthetic shampoos, conditioners, gel, etc)
What we eat and drink (good for body=good for hair)
What we do (swimming in chlorinated pools, using hair dryer, etc)
Quality of our shower water (Use a shower filter for best results to remove fluoride, chlorine, iron oxides (“rust water”), reduce harmful VOCs and other contaminants.)
Genetics (what are parents passed down to us)
How much sleep we have nightly
Our stress level and
Possibly even healthy thyroid function
So, my advice is, in addition to using the oils, review that list and determine if there is something else you need to do to support having healthy hair and scalp. This may be as simple as drinking more water!
Did you know that most shampoos, hair and skincare products on the market contain synthetic materials that create many of our hair, scalp and skin challenges?
Here are a few examples –
Propylene Glycol – may causes dry skin and skin irritation.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or Laureth Sulfate – surfactant that may corrode hair follicles
Oleyl betaine – may cause dry hair and scalp.
Mineral oils – petroleum products clog pores! Yes, the molecule is too big to be absorbed by the skin.
So, check your labels, you may be surprised! If your shampoo has a pH between 4 and 6 and doesn’t have synthetic compounds it’s supportive to healthy hair growth.
There are great natural hair products on the market that contain essential oils including the AromaSilk line by Young Living. This are the only products I will place on my head!
If you are adventurous, make them at home by using a base shampoo and adding oils that are right for your hair type or condition. I usually add 3 to 5 drops of each oil to the shampoo directly or in a tablespoon of shampoo.
But, what is my hair type and what oils do I use?

Oils for Normal Hair
Normal hair is neither greasy nor dry, has not been permed or colored, holds its style and is usually shiny.
These oils are best for normal hair:
Lavender Essential Oil
Rosemary Essential Oil
Lemon Essential Oil
Geranium Essential Oil
Cedarwood Essential Oil
Thyme Essential Oil
Clary Sage Essential Oil
The best base or carrier oils to use are jojoba, almond or borage.
Oils for Dry Hair
Dry hair looks dull, tangles easily and can become easily split at the ends. Therefore, we want essential oils for hair that stimulate the sebaceous glands in the scalp to produce more oil!

Geranium Essential Oil
The top base or carrier oils to use are almond, sesame, jojoba, borage, cocoa butter or avocado.
Oils for Oily Hair
Oily hair looks greasy and is caused by over production of sebum by the sebaceous glands. Therefore, we want essential oils for hair that restore the glands back to normal.

No problem, here are my recommendations.
Use a cleansing shampoo or cleansing oils first before you start. This will remove the buildup of chlorine, grease and chemicals in your hair and scalp.
Pick several essential oils for hair to use for shampooing and/or make a blend with the base oil. (You may have to experiment with several oils until you find what you like)
Use until you feel there is improvement.

How To Clean Hair Brushes & Combs
One thing you might not think about cleaning on the regular is your hairbrush or comb. Of course, we remove hair build up every so often but do you take the time to really clean them? The downside is if we don’t clean them on a somewhat regular basis dirt, oil and hair products can build up and leave your hair feeling not so clean. So how do we solve this problem? Well, there is an easy way to clean our your brushes and combs and it only takes a few minutes. Check out the instructions below on how to clean hair brushes and combs:
Start by removing all hair that has built up in between the bristles of your brush or comb. If some hair is woven tightly, use a toothpick to loosen.
Next, soak your tools in a sink of warm water with a few drops of shampoo. This will help remove oils and any product lingering in the bristles. Gentle scrub to get them extra clean.
If you happen to have a wooden, padded, or rubber brush skip the soaking step. Simply run these type of brushes under water with no soap to remove oils and dirt.
That’s all it takes to remove the build up on your brushes and it can be done on a weekly basis to make sure your brush is as clean as possible.

“Many company owners use environmentally friendly cars, recycle materials and buy biodegradable office supplies because they care about what happens to the environment. It also makes good business sense, making their companies more competitive and lifting employees’ morale.
W&M Properties, a New York-based real estate company that also has a construction affiliate, has switched its fleet of more than 25 pickup trucks to hybrid Ford Escape cars. President Tony Malkin said of the hybrids, “they pay for themselves in the fuel savings.” He noted that most of the company’s driving is done on local streets, and called the pickups’ mileage “appalling.”
W&M has also implemented recycling programs in the buildings it manages, including ones that handle discarded computers — “it’s what you’re supposed to do, but people don’t do it,” Malkin said.
The company also is recycling about half the materials it’s removing from a project being done for Pitney Bowes. “You’re using less landfill space, and it’s product that can be used again in the future,” Malkin said.
Malkin said his company is using more green practices because “the current way of doing business is destructible.” But, he said, “people want to do business in an environmentally sustainable fashion and we are at a competitive advantage by moving the needle toward green.”
There are many ways that companies can go green. Some of them are simple, and basic, such as conserving energy with appliances and equipment that aren’t power guzzlers. Recycling is a very common way to go green. So is buying paper and other supplies that are made with recycled material.
There are plenty of resources detailing how to go green on the Internet, in bookstores and in libraries. Environmental groups have information as well.
Mark Mandel, co-owner of Mark Drugs, a Roselle, Ill., pharmacy, said his business recycles even though the local government doesn’t have a recycling program.
“It’s an extra effort, but we feel it’s important to be conscientious about the environment,” he said.
Mandel said paper from computer printouts is sorted, with blanks pulled out, saved and reused. His company hasn’t needed to buy prescription pads since it started recycling.
He also finds it’s good for morale. “The staff realizes you are concerned,” he said, and noted that the good feeling generated by his attitude filters down to their interactions with customers.
“Everyone takes a team attitude,” he said.
The company plans to construct its own building in the future, and Mandel said it will be a green building.
Of course, for some companies, their reason for being is green, for example, organic food stores or manufacturers of clothing made from natural fibers only.
Floorworks, a Toronto-based hardwood flooring manufacturer, sells green products — it says its wood comes from forests that have been approved by the Forest Stewardship Council, a group that aims at managing forests in an environmentally friendly way. Co-founder Brian Greenberg said the company also donates a percentage of its profits toward the replanting of rainforests.
Greenberg said the company wanted to help fight the deleterious effects of climate change. “One of the problems we can address through the sale of our products is to be involved with reforestation.”
That kind of activism appeals to many consumers, who are often drawn to the idea that the money they spend can be doing good for the world. But they’re also looking for products and services that are good for them — Greenberg said his company has thrived by selling flooring that isn’t covered with polyurethane, but that’s protected by oil. That stops plastic particles from going into the air, he said.
The Greenhouse Grille, a Fayetteville, Ark., restaurant, sells organic food and uses as many environmentally friendly products and services as it can find. Clayton Suttle, a co-owner, said he and his partners have eaten organic food for years because of its health benefits, and “when we were looking into opening a restaurant, it just kind of carried over.”
“We’re trying to go as much so-called green as we can,” he said.
The partners weren’t sure from the get-go that their concept would work. But organic food has become very popular in their area, and the fact that local organic farmers were selling their meat and produce to the restaurant has helped.”

Trust me, when it comes to hair dye, I’m as picky as an amateur can be. I’ve been dyeing my hair red for 12 years, and I’ve managed to pick up a few tricks: I know exactly what to say to get the right shade (“copper tones, not purple”) and I’ve strategized how to reduce the damage for my single-process dye job (only color the roots and use a glaze on the ends).
But after all of those years of gaining expertise at the salon, I still wasn’t 100 percent satisfied with the results. My once-resilient hair had started to become dry and less vibrant, and the color seemed to fade within a week. So I decided to give organic hair color a try. Sure, the prospect was scary at first — I’m just as guilty as most people when it comes to equating “natural” with “less effective” when assessing beauty products. But after a little research, I discovered the Organic Color System and became intrigued.
Standard, non-organic hair dye is loaded with all sorts of questionably safe chemicals: ammonia, formaldehyde, sodium laurel sulphates and parabens, to name a few. Much of the research focuses on how the chemicals affect the salon workers who use them daily, but it’s not hard to see how years of chemical abuse would leave my hair — and that of 75 percent of American women who admit to dyeing their hair — less shiny and soft. (Aging, it should be noted, could be a factor here, too.) The Organic Color System, on the other hand, is a natural, ammonia-free solution that promises long-lasting, vibrant results. Between 98-99 percent of the ingredients are naturally derived or organic, and the only synthetic ingredients are the pigments and stabilizers.
Cue the skepticism. Would this dye really work?
Rather than make an uneducated assumption about organic dye, I decided to book an appointment with hairstylist Mordechai Alvow at New York City’s Yarok Beauty Kitchen. Using the Organic Color System, Alvow helped me choose between the 64 shades offered (even blonde!). The process was exponentially more enjoyable, since the anti-oxidant blend of aloe vera leaf, comfrey root, orange peel and grapefruit seed in the organic dye didn’t have the same headache-inducing effects of the harsh-smelling, ammonia-filled dye you get in most salons. (It didn’t hurt that Alvow’s adorable dog was perched on my lap the whole time, either.)
But even the most pleasant smells couldn’t get me to go organic if the results weren’t at least as good as the chemical stuff. Luckily, they were. After Alvow was done with me, the color was the most striking shade of copper red I’ve ever had, and I didn’t have that pesky line of demarcation that always gives me what I call “fire roots” (freshly dyed roots that never seem to blend properly until after a couple of washes). The best part: My hair felt 10 pounds lighter and as soft as an 8-year-old’s. Needless to say, I’m an organic hair dye convert.
Just like with standard dye, Alvow told me that the maintenance of the Organic Color System is pretty simple: Avoid products with sulfates, and wash your hair less often and with water that’s not too hot. (PSA: His haircare line Yarok has shampoo and conditioner that’s safe for color-treated hair.)
So fellow hair color devotees, all I ask of you is this: Try organic hair dye and see what you think. If the ecological and health benefits don’t sway you, the soft, chemical-free hair you get might be what convinces you to officially switch teams.

Many of us have heard of – or even tried – the Brazilian blowout. But what exactly is this keratin-based hair-smoothing treatment anyway? And what’s all the hype about? To start, the Brazilian blowout was pioneered in – you guessed it – Brazil. It was developed as a hair-straightening treatment that doesn’t burn the skin or scalp.
I have naturally curly hair, and it takes a lot of time to keep this mane in check, so I was excited when I found out about the Brazilian blowout. Finally, I could relax my curls and give my hair a beautiful shine. All I needed to do was step out of the shower and let my hair dry on its own. Further, the Brazilian blowout did exactly what it claimed to do – and I would only have to have the treatment every three months.
But as we know, nothing is perfect. There is a price to pay when getting a Brazilian blowout because the blowout – along with other hair smoothing treatments – contains formaldehyde and chemicals that can cause both acute and long-term health effects.
Formaldehyde is a chemical that is used as a preservative, an embalming agent and a disinfectant. However, formaldehyde can also modify our hair proteins, called keratins, causing the hair to return to its original, smooth, healthy state. Some of the other chemicals that can cause health issues are methylene glycol, formalin, methylene oxide, paraform, formic aldehyde, methanol, oxomethane, oxymethylene and CAS Number 50-00-0. The chemical methylene glycol is formed when formaldehyde gas is added to water; when heated, this chemical turns back into formaldehyde gas and is then released into the air.
According to Jarrod Harms, an industry expert and owner of Detour Salon in San Diego California, these chemicals can be harmful at room temperature. “But when they are heated, the intensity is increased and can cause harm to both you and your stylist,” says Harms. Some of the acute side effects include nosebleeds, burning eyes and throat, skin irritations and asthma attacks. These chemicals can also lead to long-term health issues, including nasopharyngeal cancer and leukemia.
Formaldehyde, among these other chemicals, is not illegal, and obviously can be used in cosmetic products. Because of these reported health risks, the FDA has now stated that these blowouts are “misbranded because its label and labeling (including instructions for use) make misleading statements regarding the product’s ingredients and fail to reveal material facts with respect to consequences that may result from the use of the product.” In other words, these blowouts are not illegal. However, they lead us to believe that these products are safe and have no harmful side effects. The problem here is related to disclosure.
So should you get one or not? Well, think of this blog as a drug commercial. I know you’ve seen them: someone running on the beach, laughing and enjoying life, while the voice tells you how well the drug works. But then the voice quickly spouts off a laundry list of all the side effects. It’s the same thing with these products, except before the FDA stepped in, all you ever heard about were the benefits.
You can decide whether you want to take a risk by getting a Brazilian blowout. It’s like anything in life: You weigh the risk against the reward. Now, when it comes to the Brazilian blowout, you can base your decision on the facts.
