Angelo, what does inspire you most?
“Inspiration can come from so many different places, but the essence of the natural world is surely what inspires me most. Mother Nature surrounds us and permeates every aspect of our life with boundless beauty that will never stop to fill with wonder the eyes of those who want to see it. I am indeed very curious and I think that inspiration is basically all about curiosity and passion for what you do: if you don’t have that hunger for knowledge, then you are just missing so many chances of discovering and inventing something new, both in hairstyling and in life.”

Where does creativity meet hairstyling?
“I think that creativity is a recipe made of many different ingredients: inspiration sources, individual sensitivity and, last but not least, the love and dedication to your profession, hairstyling in my case.
One of my objectives in hairstyling is to step outside the box, to create something that seems impossible and unexpected, that pleases my eyes, mind and soul, but nevertheless my philosophy is always to make a woman look beautiful and modern. Originality often means eclecticism, a mix of elements coming from different forms of art, that’s why to work with hair I also search for inspiration from other fields that are not necessarily the hairdressing one, such as fashion industry, photography, architecture, design and contemporary art. I like to collect, combine and experiment, translating all the ideas and re-elaborating all influences in various ways: besides my salon work, my creative collection productions and magazine shooting works, I design hair for art curators for fashion exhibitions.
I love hairdressing and if you love something in life you automatically become loyal and truthful to it. Hairdressing is my passion, through good and bad times and I always stick with it. Every day I look forward to my job. I definitely believe creative hairdressing is an art form in itself, a vital visual force to complement other arts.”
If we ask you to tell us the name of a hairstylist who represented a turning point for your career…
“The first name that comes into my mind is for sure that of Trevor Sorbie, a real hairdressing icon, who has inspired the whole sector at a worldwide level, becoming a mentor for many of today’s top hairdressers, thanks to his ability of always combining perfectly the highest quality standards with the most excellent hairdressing. Working with him for 15 years was a very meaningful and enriching life experience, he became like a father to me and I feel very grateful for what he gave me from both a professional and a human point of view.”
What is new, in your opinion, in the latest hairstyling trends?
“While rushing through the professional day by day routine, a hairdresser, like all the other artisans, sometimes runs the risk of forgetting to focus on some basic aspects of his craft, missing some great chances of adding value to his work.
I think that this is the moment to rediscover the creative potential of blow-drying that, in my opinion, is precious like an accessory to be worn, the final expert touch that enhances the beauty of a style. I’m working with Davines on something new, an homage to this special craft, to give it back its artistic dignity. I perceive the blow-drying as an art, and I want to invite all the hairdressers to realize their own masterpiece with hair. You’ll discover soon what I am talking about, I hope that you’ll enjoy it and that you’ll have fun!”

How To Clean Hair Brushes & Combs
One thing you might not think about cleaning on the regular is your hairbrush or comb. Of course, we remove hair build up every so often but do you take the time to really clean them? The downside is if we don’t clean them on a somewhat regular basis dirt, oil and hair products can build up and leave your hair feeling not so clean. So how do we solve this problem? Well, there is an easy way to clean our your brushes and combs and it only takes a few minutes. Check out the instructions below on how to clean hair brushes and combs:
Start by removing all hair that has built up in between the bristles of your brush or comb. If some hair is woven tightly, use a toothpick to loosen.
Next, soak your tools in a sink of warm water with a few drops of shampoo. This will help remove oils and any product lingering in the bristles. Gentle scrub to get them extra clean.
If you happen to have a wooden, padded, or rubber brush skip the soaking step. Simply run these type of brushes under water with no soap to remove oils and dirt.
That’s all it takes to remove the build up on your brushes and it can be done on a weekly basis to make sure your brush is as clean as possible.

My Hair Trip Salon Denver has now been open for just about 4 months. From the day we had the idea, to the day we found our space, to today … it’s been a trip. Building and running a salon has taught us a lot about life, about what it takes to succeed, and about each other.
Today we have the salon looking almost just the way we want it. We are displaying 12 local artists in our gallery, carrying 15 different local designers goods in the boutique, have 5 stylists and a salon manager that are kicking major butt everyday, and we are really having a blast.
All of us at My Hair Trip Salon are on the same page. It truly is joy to come into the salon everyday. We are all focused on making sure our clients and any visitors to the salon feel comfortable and are treated like the kings and queens that they are. We love making people smile, and we have been seeing a ton of smiles lately.
We are Denver’s only eco-friendly hair salon, barbershop, art gallery, and jewelry and apparel boutique. We really love our unique shop we have down here in Denver’s Art District on Santa Fe (the creative epicenter of the city), and the people of Denver are seeming to really love it as well.

Woohoo! Green living used to be hard to do, and it still is, but it’s getting easier. My Hair Trip Salon Denver is looking for one great stylist / colorist to join our team. My Hair Trip is Colorado’s only green salon, barbershop, art gallery, and jewelry and apparel boutique. Our team has a great chemistry right now and the vibe in our shop is really great. It feels good looking forward to coming into work. We are looking for another great stylist that is focused on their career as an artist, and is positive and upbeat about being the best they can be at whatever it is they do.
We give our stylists what they need to succeed. Our staff enjoys massive exposure we receive from 1st Friday Art Walks and other Art District events. Being located at 8th and Santa Fe, in the heart of the Art District is really great for us. There is foot traffic down here everyday, and there are lots of events in the district that bring people to our neighborhood, and in through our door year-round. We are a fully functioning art gallery as well as a premier salon, so we have a great pull for art district events and the walls of our shop are always full of great local art from all over the state. Our clients love it and so do we. Our stylists also receive commission on anything they sell in our boutique or gallery in addition to their product and service commissions. Our stylists start at 40% commission on services and can earn all the way up to 75%. Our product commission is 17.5% which is much hire than the average salons in Denver offering 10%.
We have product and technique knowledge classes going on all the time. Our stylists can do as much or as little as they want to, as far as continuous education. Whenever one of our stylists go to a class, or workshop, or seminar and learn something new, they come back and show the rest of us what they learned, so we are all always on the cutting edge of styles, trends, and techniques. We also offer our stylists sales incentives such as tickets to shows, and education classes and events.
We are an organic, eco friendly shop so we are looking for a stylist that is interested in using the chemical free products and services that we offer. We also really want to bring on someone who, either is passionate about organic, green living in their own life, or at least is interested and willing to learn more about what healthy green living is. “Many company owners use environmentally friendly cars, recycle materials and buy biodegradable office supplies because they care about what happens to the environment. It also makes good business sense, making their companies more competitive and lifting employees’ morale.
W&M Properties, a New York-based real estate company that also has a construction affiliate, has switched its fleet of more than 25 pickup trucks to hybrid Ford Escape cars. President Tony Malkin said of the hybrids, “they pay for themselves in the fuel savings.” He noted that most of the company’s driving is done on local streets, and called the pickups’ mileage “appalling.”
W&M has also implemented recycling programs in the buildings it manages, including ones that handle discarded computers — “it’s what you’re supposed to do, but people don’t do it,” Malkin said.
The company also is recycling about half the materials it’s removing from a project being done for Pitney Bowes. “You’re using less landfill space, and it’s product that can be used again in the future,” Malkin said.
Malkin said his company is using more green practices because “the current way of doing business is destructible.” But, he said, “people want to do business in an environmentally sustainable fashion and we are at a competitive advantage by moving the needle toward green.”
There are many ways that companies can go green. Some of them are simple, and basic, such as conserving energy with appliances and equipment that aren’t power guzzlers. Recycling is a very common way to go green. So is buying paper and other supplies that are made with recycled material.
There are plenty of resources detailing how to go green on the Internet, in bookstores and in libraries. Environmental groups have information as well.
Mark Mandel, co-owner of Mark Drugs, a Roselle, Ill., pharmacy, said his business recycles even though the local government doesn’t have a recycling program.
“It’s an extra effort, but we feel it’s important to be conscientious about the environment,” he said.
Mandel said paper from computer printouts is sorted, with blanks pulled out, saved and reused. His company hasn’t needed to buy prescription pads since it started recycling.
He also finds it’s good for morale. “The staff realizes you are concerned,” he said, and noted that the good feeling generated by his attitude filters down to their interactions with customers.
“Everyone takes a team attitude,” he said.
The company plans to construct its own building in the future, and Mandel said it will be a green building.
Of course, for some companies, their reason for being is green, for example, organic food stores or manufacturers of clothing made from natural fibers only.
Floorworks, a Toronto-based hardwood flooring manufacturer, sells green products — it says its wood comes from forests that have been approved by the Forest Stewardship Council, a group that aims at managing forests in an environmentally friendly way. Co-founder Brian Greenberg said the company also donates a percentage of its profits toward the replanting of rainforests.
Greenberg said the company wanted to help fight the deleterious effects of climate change. “One of the problems we can address through the sale of our products is to be involved with reforestation.”
That kind of activism appeals to many consumers, who are often drawn to the idea that the money they spend can be doing good for the world. But they’re also looking for products and services that are good for them — Greenberg said his company has thrived by selling flooring that isn’t covered with polyurethane, but that’s protected by oil. That stops plastic particles from going into the air, he said.
The Greenhouse Grille, a Fayetteville, Ark., restaurant, sells organic food and uses as many environmentally friendly products and services as it can find. Clayton Suttle, a co-owner, said he and his partners have eaten organic food for years because of its health benefits, and “when we were looking into opening a restaurant, it just kind of carried over.”
“We’re trying to go as much so-called green as we can,” he said.
The partners weren’t sure from the get-go that their concept would work. But organic food has become very popular in their area, and the fact that local organic farmers were selling their meat and produce to the restaurant has helped.”

Trust me, when it comes to hair dye, I’m as picky as an amateur can be. I’ve been dyeing my hair red for 12 years, and I’ve managed to pick up a few tricks: I know exactly what to say to get the right shade (“copper tones, not purple”) and I’ve strategized how to reduce the damage for my single-process dye job (only color the roots and use a glaze on the ends).
But after all of those years of gaining expertise at the salon, I still wasn’t 100 percent satisfied with the results. My once-resilient hair had started to become dry and less vibrant, and the color seemed to fade within a week. So I decided to give organic hair color a try. Sure, the prospect was scary at first — I’m just as guilty as most people when it comes to equating “natural” with “less effective” when assessing beauty products. But after a little research, I discovered the Organic Color System and became intrigued.
Standard, non-organic hair dye is loaded with all sorts of questionably safe chemicals: ammonia, formaldehyde, sodium laurel sulphates and parabens, to name a few. Much of the research focuses on how the chemicals affect the salon workers who use them daily, but it’s not hard to see how years of chemical abuse would leave my hair — and that of 75 percent of American women who admit to dyeing their hair — less shiny and soft. (Aging, it should be noted, could be a factor here, too.) The Organic Color System, on the other hand, is a natural, ammonia-free solution that promises long-lasting, vibrant results. Between 98-99 percent of the ingredients are naturally derived or organic, and the only synthetic ingredients are the pigments and stabilizers.
Cue the skepticism. Would this dye really work?
Rather than make an uneducated assumption about organic dye, I decided to book an appointment with hairstylist Mordechai Alvow at New York City’s Yarok Beauty Kitchen. Using the Organic Color System, Alvow helped me choose between the 64 shades offered (even blonde!). The process was exponentially more enjoyable, since the anti-oxidant blend of aloe vera leaf, comfrey root, orange peel and grapefruit seed in the organic dye didn’t have the same headache-inducing effects of the harsh-smelling, ammonia-filled dye you get in most salons. (It didn’t hurt that Alvow’s adorable dog was perched on my lap the whole time, either.)
But even the most pleasant smells couldn’t get me to go organic if the results weren’t at least as good as the chemical stuff. Luckily, they were. After Alvow was done with me, the color was the most striking shade of copper red I’ve ever had, and I didn’t have that pesky line of demarcation that always gives me what I call “fire roots” (freshly dyed roots that never seem to blend properly until after a couple of washes). The best part: My hair felt 10 pounds lighter and as soft as an 8-year-old’s. Needless to say, I’m an organic hair dye convert.
Just like with standard dye, Alvow told me that the maintenance of the Organic Color System is pretty simple: Avoid products with sulfates, and wash your hair less often and with water that’s not too hot. (PSA: His haircare line Yarok has shampoo and conditioner that’s safe for color-treated hair.)
So fellow hair color devotees, all I ask of you is this: Try organic hair dye and see what you think. If the ecological and health benefits don’t sway you, the soft, chemical-free hair you get might be what convinces you to officially switch teams.
